Compassion, Commitment, Responsibility and Respect

Clinical Neuropsychology

With advanced knowledge of the cognitive, emotional, behavioural effects of a wide range of brain conditions, clinical neuropsychology is a specific field of psychology that focuses on understanding the relationships between brain, thinking skills and behaviour.

Clinical neuropsychologists have expertise in assessment and treatment of children, adolescents and adults with neurological and psychological disorders that primarily affect memory, learning, attention, language, reading, problem-solving and decision-making.

A neuropsychological assessment conducted by an AHPRA endorsed clinical neuropsychologist can be used to inform diagnosis, characterise cognitive strengths and weaknesses, plan and provide treatment recommendations tailored to the individual needs.

Creative Arts Therapy

By utilising active engagement through the artistic process of creative modalities including drama and music within a therapeutic relationship, creative arts therapies are a form of psychotherapy designed to support physical, emotional, cognitive and social functioning.

Creative arts therapists help people increase awareness of self and others, cope with the symptoms of stress, gain insight into patterns of behaviour, and identify alternative ways of coping.

A recent report from World Health Organization (WHO), Health Evidence Network Synthesis Report 67 (2019), investigated arts based therapies from over 3000 studies and found “a major role for the arts in the prevention of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan”.

She also has experience conducting assessments and interventions with clients across the lifespan including children with learning disorders and neurodevelopmental conditions (ASD, ADHD). Claire’s main area of expertise is in assessment and management of cognitive changes associated with acquired brain injury (stroke, traumatic brain injury, alcohol-related brain injury) and assessment and diagnosis of neurodegenerative conditions and dementia.

Dr JooYeoul (JY) Ryu

Creative Arts Therapist | Psychoanalyst

PhD in Arts and Aesthetics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, 2008
MFA in Dramatics, National School of Drama, India
BA (Hons.) in Theatre Arts, Chung-Ang University, Korea

Dr JooYeoul (JY) Ryu has been a lecturer and psychotherapist using the medium of actor-training methods, theatre techniques and psychodrama therapy since 2009. He is experienced in working with adolescents and adults from diverse walks of life experiencing depression, anxiety, anger issue, self-image, emotional difficulties, trauma, grief and loss, and life transitions. The basic premise of his clinical practice involves the cognitive behavioral model on body-mind dynamics between thought process, emotional memory, sensory awareness and action pattern. He also has 14-year tertiary teaching experience in creative arts, including at University of Melbourne and Monash University, primarily grounded on biomechanics, kinesiology, breathing techniques, phonetics and vocalisation, cognitive behavioural methods, character analysis and characterisation.

JY lived in India for a decade and conducted extensive research-cum-practical training on meditation, martial arts and yoga. His focus was on the pursuit of the organic wholeness of being as an integrated union of thought, emotion and sense. He likes to depict metaphorically this harmonised mental attitude as ‘when body becomes one thousand eyes’. It is an active and experiential approach that can help clients address various emotional and/or psychological issues, often deeply hidden in themselves, process past experiences, and work through challenging life situations. JY maintains his belief that his major role, as a clinical psychotherapist, is to help clients [re]discover independently their innate capacity for a creative state of mind, which is a combination of self-motivation, self-discipline, self-knowledge, self-determination, and vision.

As a previous overseas marketing executive of a national television and radio network, JY has also a unique understanding of clients working in high pressure settings, which demands high management, priority setting, planning and organising to meet specific deadlines. He has an interest in collaborating with clients who are required to adjust with flexibility to rapidly changing schedules and frequently shifting priorities.

Outside of his work life, JY enjoys mountaineering and meditation that occupy his time for the self-discipline they deliver. He believes that they are important for enriching his life and renewing his drive in his professional field. He currently provides clinical therapeutic services in Neurotree and teaches in Monash University.
